Why Every Girl Needs a Sports Bra for PE

Kids are back to school and have all their essentials sorted, or did they? New uniforms, shoes, and backpacks are often at the top of the list, but there’s one crucial item that often goes overlooked – a sports bra. In recent studies, it has been found that many girls avoid participating in sports and exercise due to discomfort and embarrassment caused by inadequate breast support. This not only hinders their physical health but also negatively impacts their self-confidence and overall well-being.

The Impact of Inadequate Breast Support

Dr. Nicola Brown of St Mary’s University, Twickenham, in the UK conducted a survey involving over 2,000 girls between the ages of 11 and 17. The results revealed that approximately half of the girls avoid sports and exercise due to breast-related discomfort. Shockingly, only 10% of the participants reported always wearing a sports bra during physical activity, while more than half had never worn one. This lack of breast support puts the delicate breast tissue at risk of damage, particularly during a period of growth and development. Additionally, many tween and teen girls feel self-conscious and embarrassed about their changing body shape during PE classes, often leading them to opt-out of sports altogether.

The Importance of a Well-Fitted Sports Bra

A well-fitted sports bra is not just a luxury but an essential item for every tween and teen’s PE kit. It provides the necessary support and protection for the breasts during physical activity, minimizing discomfort and potential damage. Without proper support, the breast tissue can experience excessive movement and strain, leading to pain, sagging, and even long-term damage. Furthermore, a good sports bra can enhance girls’ overall performance and confidence, allowing them to focus on their athletic abilities rather than worrying about discomfort or self-consciousness.

When to Get Your Teen Fitted for Their First Bra

Finding the right fit is crucial when it comes to sports bras. Usually, bust development starts between the age of 8-12 years, but every tween or teen is different what works for one might not work for the other. If you notice your tween or teen is feeling heaviness or tenderness in her chest, pulling out of activities and dreading P.E sessions, wearing baggier clothes, or rolling her shoulders inwards it probably means that she is uncomfortable and it’s time for a proper bra fitting.

Many tween and teen girls and their parents believe that a simple crop top is sufficient, especially if the breasts are small. However, crop tops often do not provide adequate support, even for smaller breast sizes, and certainly not for medium or high-impact activities. When selecting a sports bra for pre-teen and teenage girls, there are a few key factors to consider:

  1. Support level: Look for sports bras that offer medium to high support, depending on the intensity of the activities your child will be participating in. High-impact sports, such as running or jumping, require more support to minimize breast movement and discomfort.
  2. Comfort: Opt for sports bras made from breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics to keep your teen comfortable and dry during physical activity. Seamless or flat-seamed bras can also reduce irritation and chafing.
  3. Adjustability: Choose sports bras with adjustable straps and closures to ensure a customized and secure fit. This allows for flexibility as your teen’s body grows and changes.

It is important to emphasize that every girl, regardless of her body shape or size, deserves the same level of comfort and support during physical activity. Sports bras should be available in a wide range of sizes to accommodate the diverse needs of girls. At TKD Lingerie, we have over 140 bra sizes starting from a AA to a K  cup and from a 28-46 back band. As parents prepare their children for a new school year, it is crucial to remember the importance of a well-fitted sports bra in a girl’s PE kit. By providing the necessary support and protection, sports bras can alleviate discomfort, boost confidence, and empower girls to participate fully in sports and exercise. With the right fit and style, girls can focus on their athletic abilities, rather than worrying about their changing bodies. Let’s make sports bras a must-have item for every girl, promoting inclusivity, and nurturing their physical and emotional well-being.
